Located in the pristine village of Shela, along the cost of the Lamu archipelago are the Moon Houses. It is one of the most prestigious and well-preserved location on the Kenyan coast.
Since centuries, Swahilis from Lamu island have been welcoming travelers and traders from Oman and India. Their culture and traditions are built on this rich and fascinating historical influence.
Shela beach is a 13 km long un-spoilt white sandy beach. Most of our homes have a close access to the sea and offer spectacular sea views from the bedrooms and terraces.
This destination will satisfy all guests looking for white sandy beach, water sports, cultural encounter with the Swahili community, historical visits to Lamu Town (UNESCO World Heritage Site), and wonderful and refined Swahili seafood.
Our homes are privately owned. They are built in pure Swahili Style and are all furnished with antique furniture bought by late Anne Spoerry – one of Kenya’s first Flying Doctors. The houses are strictly self-catering which means that apart from a supply of basic ingredients (sugar, olive oil, spices… etc) we do not provide fresh food. Guests can select their meals from our guideline menu. Our cooks will do all food errands with a lot of care to get the freshest ingredients and will prepare all meals according to the guest’s choice. Meals will be served in a private dinning area or on a terrace. Food is charged at cost and recorded in a book of accounts always available to client for review.
